Cholesterol
Cholesterol is a fat-like substance our bodies naturally make and is only found in foods that come from animals. Our bodies cannot function without it, but having too much cholesterol in our blood, increases our risk of heart disease.
There are Two Main Types of Cholesterol
HDL (High Density Lipoprotein) "good cholesterol" - helps protect your heart by removing excess cholesterol in the blood. Therefore, you want this HIGH.
LDL (Low Density Lipoprotein) "bad cholesterol" - high levels can lead to clogged arteries and risk of "hardening of the arteries" or heart disease. Therefore, you want this LOW.
Foods & Cholesterol
Eating foods that contain cholesterol, such as lean Pork, does not affect your blood cholesterol levels as much as eating foods high in saturated fats or trans fats, such as fast foods. Eating more vegetables and grains with lean meats at mealtime will help balance your cholesterol levels.
